Assam: AASU to protest month-long agitation over govt’s decision to teach maths, science in English

Guwahati: The All-Assam Students’ Union (AASU) on Friday announced a month-long statewide agitation against the state government’s decision to teach maths and science subjects in English in the vernacular medium schools of the state from Class 6 onwards.

The series of agitation by the students’ union will start with a discussion with the teachers’ associations of the state on Sunday and will culminate with a meeting of the academicians and educationists of the state on June 27 in Assam’s Guwahati.

The series of agitation will culminate with a meeting of academicians and educationists at Guwahati on June 27, official said.

“We strongly oppose the government’s decision to teach mathematics and science in English, as it poses a threat to the preservation and development of Assamese, Bodo, and other regional languages”, official said.

“Since its announcement last year, we have consistently voiced our dissent,” official stated.
“Now, we will launch a month-long agitation from May 27 to press for withdrawal of the decision,” they said.

The series of agitations will start with a discussion with the teachers’ associations of the state on May 28.

On May 31, all regional committees of AASU will observe a 10-hour fast, followed by a “gana satyagraha” in Guwahati on June 6.
