Assam Accord: AASU Presses For Implementation Of Clause 5, Agreement With Bangladesh

Guwahati: The All Assam Students’ Union (AASU) has once again pressed for a bilateral agreement between India and Bangladesh to deport illegal foreigners from Assam.

On Wednesday, AASU leaders sit for a discussion with the newly formed sub-committee set up to conceptualise a framework for implantation of all clauses of the Assam Accord and discussed the crucial Clause 5 of the Accord.

The Clause 5 of Assam Accord relates to detection, deletion (from electoral rolls) and deportation of foreigners who entered Assam illegally after March 25, 1971.

The student group also demanded empowering the various department involved in detecting illegal foreigners in the state as well as the Foreigners’’ Tribunals (FTs), a quasi judicial system.

AASU leader Samujjal Bhattacherjee said, “It’s important to empower the police department which involves in detecting illegal foreigners in the state. We have suggested that there should be a dedicated top police official in every district exclusively for the job to accelerate the process.”

AASU general secretary Sankar Jyoti Baruah added, “Today we have discussed on crucial Clause 5 of Assam Accord. Since there is no bilateral agreement between India and Bangladesh for deporting the illegal migrants, we have asked the state government to pursue the matter with the Centre immediately.”

The state’s Implementation of Assam Accord minister Atul Bora who is heading the committee added, “The state government is committed to implement Assam Accord’s all clauses in its true letter and spirit. There are certain issues in which the state government has limitations and Centre needs to intervene. Through the discussions with AASU, the state government is trying to reach on unanimous decisions to take it forward.”

The sub-committee headed by Bora and has three ministers and five members from AASU including chief adviser Samujjal Kumar Bhattacharya. Other ministers on the panel are Parliamentary Affairs Minister Pijush Hazarika and Finance Minister Ajanta Neog.
