Assam Finance Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on January 13th, 2020, said the historic Assam Accord signed in 1985 between the Government of India and the State government and the Assam Movement leaders is not a full-proof document.
“Many things were not included in the Assam Accord. Even, the need for a National Register of Citizens (NRC) was also not included. NRC has evolved as a concept in post-Assam Accord era. NRC has not been updated on the basis of the Accord. Assam Accord is not a full proof document. It evolved in the process of time,” the minister said while speaking in the special session of the Assam Assembly held today.

Assam Accord was violated on many occasions. It is contradictory that people raise voice against BJP but won’t raise voice to protect the Assam Accord. “Where it was written that 1971 is the cut-off year to detect and deport illegal Bangladeshis? It was not there in the Accord,” Sarma said.
Slamming the Congress for protesting against the act, Sarma said that the same party which is vehemently opposing the act had amended the act for twice earlier. “They amended the Act in 1987 and 1993,” he added.
