GUWAHATI: Assam’s ace boxer Lovlina Borgohain has once again brought laurels to the state as she was conferred with the prestigious Arjuna Award.
Borgohain was recommended by the selection committee of the Union Sports Ministry for the prestigious award on Tuesday. The award function was held virtually on August 29, the National Sports Day, instead of the Rashtrapati Bhavan this year due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
She took twitter to express her gratitude on receiving the award. “It is an honour to be recognized with the prestigious Arjuna Award. I would like to thank @IndiaSports @Media_SAI @BFI_official all my coaches, teammates, family and friends wo have supported me along this journey. @mygovassam @CMOfficeAssam @OGO_India @iosindiaoff”, she tweeted.
Congratulating her on the achievement, Assam CM Sarbananda Sonowal tweeted, “Congratulations to ace boxer @LovlinaBorgohain for the Arjuna Award 2020. This is a moment of pride for India as well as Assam as she is the only WC medalist women athlete from Assam and her achievements will serve as great inspiration for our youths to pursue their dreams.”
The 22-year-old boxer has become the first woman from Assam to qualify for the Olympics in the 69 kg weight category. After Shiva Thapa she is the second boxer from the state to represent the country at the Olympics.
Earlier, Borgohain won a gold medal at 1st India Open International Boxing Tournament held in New Delhi and a silver medal at the 2nd India Open International Boxing Tournament held in Guwahati.
Most recently she won a bronze medal at the 2019 AIBA Women’s World Boxing Championships held in Ulan-Ude, Russia.
A total of 29 athletes was recommended from across the country for the Arjuna Award. The list includes Indian Cricketer Ishant Sharma, Atanu Das, Deepika Thakur, Deepak Hooda, Diviji Sharan, Mirabai Chanu, Sakshi Malik and three Paralympians.
