Guwahati: After a historic win in the Assam Assembly election, activist Akhil Gogoi has booked the government residence of former MLA Brindaban Goswami in Dispur.
Claiming a victory from the Sibasagar constituency, Gogoi booked the No 53 government residential cottage in MLA Colony.
The residence was earlier allotted to former five-times Asom Gana Parisad MLA from Tezpur constituency, Brindaban Goswami, who was denied ticket this time.
Gogoi scripted history by winning the Sibasagar seat in Assam. With the victory, he claimed to become the second Indian person to win the election from behind the bars.
Prior to Gogoi, Janata Dal leader George Fernandes won the Muzaffarpur seat in Bihar from jail in 1977.
Gogoi, who has been currently admitted to Gauhati medical college hospital (GMCH), defeated BJP’s Surabhi Rajkonwari. He registered his victory without even turning up at any rally.
Gogoi was arrested in December 2019 during the anti CAA movement in the state by state police. However, later the investigation of his case was handed over to the National Investigation Agency (NIA) which booked him under the stringent Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA).
