Assam Assembly Session: Cong, AIUDF Stage Walkout; MLA Sherman Ali Marshalled Out

The opposition Congress and All India United Democratic Front (AIUDF) staged a walkout from the Assam Assembly after the speaker rejected their adjournment motion to discuss the newly enacted Citizenship Amendment Act on the first day of the budget session on March 2nd, 2020.

Congress had moved the motion requesting the speaker Hitendra Nath Goswami to hold discussion over the amended act. however, the speaker rejected the opposition’s demand.

Leader of the opposition Debabrata Saikia said that government has violated the freedom of expression by imposing 144 during anti-CAA protest.  The AIUDF legislator Hafiz Bashir Ahmed said that the Act is against the spirit of the Assam Accord.

Replying to the adjournment motion, state’s Commerce and Industry Minister Chandra Mohan Patowary said that the state government is ready to discuss the issue but adjournment motion is not required as the matter is sub-judice.

Later, opposition MLAs gathered in front of the Speaker and staged protests and staged a walkout from the house.

Congress legislator from Baghbar Sherman Ali was suspended from the assembly by the speaker for the day and was marshalled out for refusing to obey the order. He raised the issue of the appointment of Hitesh Dev Sharma as the state coordinator of National Register of Citizens (NRC) during question hour.

Later, the MLA told reporters that his suspension reflected the undemocratic attitude of the present government.
