Assam BJP Bats For CAB, Slams ‘Double-Faced’ Congress

The Centre is going to re-introduce the Bill in the ongoing winter session of the Parliament

The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)’s unit in Assam extended its support to the Centre’s decision to bring in the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill and slammed the Congress for protesting against the Bill.

Addressing a press meet in Guwahati on December 2nd, 2019, Assam BJP president Ranjeet Kumar Dass said, “The Home Ministry will take all measures to protect the rights of the indigenous people. The Centre will also implement Clause 6 of the Assam Accord. The Bill will protect the Assamese community.”

He added, “Congress has opposed to the Bill. However, it skipped meeting Home Minister Amit Shah. Congress decided to skip the crucial meeting because it is double-faced. The party’s stand on the Bill changes from time to time. It has two separate views in Brahmaputra and Barak valleys.”

In wake of protests in the Northeast over the Bill, Shah had called for a meeting with the political parties, students’ bodies and civil society organisations from Assam, Tripura, Mizoram, Arunachal Pradesh, Meghalaya and Nagaland. The Centre is going to re-introduce the Bill in the ongoing winter session of the Parliament.

The Bill seeks to grant Indian citizenship to the people belonging to the Hindus, Jains, Christians, Sikhs, Buddhists, and Parsis who have become the victims of religious persecution in Pakistan, Bangladesh, and Afghanistan and entered India on or before December 31st, 2014. The Centre will attempt to pass the Bill by December 10th, 2019.
