A Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) MLA of Dibrugarh constituency sparked controversy after he compared the Muslim community with cows that don’t yield milk.

Dibrugarh MLA Prasanta Phukan, passed this remark while talking about the voter pattern among the Muslim community in the Lok Sabha election. He also added that the Assam Government shouldn’t support the Muslims as they do not cast their votes for the BJP.

Leader of the Opposition in the Assam Legislative Assembly, Debabrata Saikia reacting on Phukan’s controversial comment wrote to the Speaker of the Assembly on May 2nd, 2019 demanding stern action against the MLA.

Earlier this week, Phukan told the media that ninety per cent Hindus had voted for the BJP while, 90 per cent of the Muslim community did not vote for the party. “So, what’s the point of feeding fodder to a cow who doesn’t yield milk?,” he said.

Meanwhile, speaking about his controversial statement, Phukan said that the meaning of the statement is “seeking vote from the Muslim community is of no use”. “I never intended to insult the community, I just used an Assamese proverb,” he said as quoted by The Indian Express.
