Assam By-polls: Akhil Gogoi wants Congress to reconsider alliance

Guwahati: Raijor Dal (RD) chief and Sibsagar MLA Akhil Gogoi appealed the Congress to rethink its strategy on the ensuing state assembly by-polls on Wednesday. The appeal came hours after Assam Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC) announced that the negotiation between the two parties has failed and subsequently declared its candidates in all five seats going to polls.

Gogoi alleged that due to the adamancy of Congress, the negotiation between the parties did not work out. He said that RD was insisting Congress not to field candidate in Thowra seat where it had already projected its senior leader Dhaijya Konwar.

“We asked them not to contest in Thowra as RD base was very strong in that constituency. But they (Congress) refused and fielded its candidate. It will only help BJP in winning the seat as the anti BJP votes will once again get divided,” he said.

Congress has fielded Manoranjan Konwar to contest from the Thowra seat.

Gogoi added, “Congress has been impractical. It believes it can treat other political parties as juniors. But it should make proper strategy if wants to defeat BJP. There is still time and Congress should reconsider its decision as we can help them winning in other seats if they leave Thowra to us.”

Five assembly seats of Gossaigaon, Tamulpur, Thowra, Mariani and Bhabanipur were slated to go on polls on October 30.
