Assam By-Polls: APCC legal dept alleges lapses in security of EVMs in Bhabanipur LAC; lodges complaint

Guwahati: The Assam Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC) legal department lodged a complaint with CEO, Assam and CEC, Delhi on EVMs being taken by hand in a busy street without security arrangements by poll officials in Bhabanipur Constituency on Saturday.

In a complaint letter, Madhurjya Choudhury, advocate and general secretary (ADM) legal department (APCC) said, “We have come across another unfortunate incident which has occurred while transmission of the EVMs etc of the polling stations of Bhabanipur LAC to the strong room last night after the completion of the polling.”

Choudhury also added, “It is observed that vehicles carrying EVMs etc from the polling centres of Bhabanipur LAC were stationed at Bajali High School and thereafter, the presiding officers and polling officers appointed under the polling stations of the Bhabanipur LAC were seen to have been carrying the EVMs etc. to the strong room located at Bajali college which is not less than 500 meters far from the Bajali High School without any security arrangement.”

The APCC also enclosed video footage to substantiate the incident and urged the CEO Assam, Nitin Khade to look into the matter immediately and take prompt and appropriate action against the presiding officers, polling officers as well as the returning officer appointed under the polling stations of Bhabanipur LAC.
