Assam by-polls: ECI issues notice to BJP leader for “give and take” remark
GUWAHATI: The Election Commission issued a notice on Wednesday to Minister of Irrigation, Ashok Singhal for breaking the model code during electioneering for bypolls by asking for votes if people wanted work on a river embankment to start.
Singhal didn’t receive permission from the appropriate authority to hold one of the public meetings, according to the official.
He has until Thursday at 5 pm to reply to the notification.
“It is not enough to clap; you must vote. From one hand, give, and from the other, take. You give first, and then I will give/return the favour. If members from the Congress, the BPF and the AIUDF visit tomorrow to explain or request for votes, then the embankment work will not begin”, as per the English translation of his remark included in the Commission’s notice.
The election commission was responding to a complaint filed against the BJP’s star campaigner.
On October 30, bypolls will be held in the state and the results will be counted on November 2.
