Guwahati: Akhil Gogoi led Raijor Dal (RD) has sent a proposal to Assam Congress to leave at least one seat out of the six assembly constituencies going for bypolls soon.
The six constituencies of Gossaigaon, Tamulpur, Bhabanipur, Mariani, Majuli and Thowra will go for a bypolls likely to be held by the end of this year.
Two seats were left vacant after the deaths of a Bodoland Peoples’ Front (BPF) and a United Peoples Party Liberal (UPPL) member due to Covid-19 while two Congress leaders moved to the BJP. Former chief minister and Majuli MLA Sarbananda Sonowal joined the union cabinet and an AIUDF legislator is speculated to join BJP this week.
Gogoi said, “The ball is in Congress’s court. We have proposed them that we can help them in five seats if they help us in one seat. But Congress is yet to make its stand clear.”
The RD leader informed that Congress has been contemplating to fight in all the seats alone. “If the opposition except All India United Democratic Front (AIUDF) doesn’t unite then BJP will get a walkover again. But if Congress doesn’t understand it then Raijor Dal will also have to fight alone. We are likely to win two seats of Thaora and Mariani,” he added.
The leader also mocked BJP’s planning to go big for Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s 71st birthday, with a three-week-long campaign to showcase his work.
Gogoi said, “It’s just a showmanship. Modi magic is over and that’s why such celebration is an attempt to get attention. It’s going to be the celebration of India’s most tyrant leader’s birthday after independence.”
