Guwahati: Raijor Dal president and Sibsagar MLA Akhil Gogoi has nominated former general secretary of Krishak Mukti Sangram Samiti (KMSS), Dhajya Konwar as its candidate from Thowra constituency for the ensuing by-polls, the date of which is yet to be announced.
Addressing the media on Thursday, Gogoi said, “I am announcing the name of Konwar for the 107 Thowra Vidhan Sabha seat as Raijor Dal candidate. If elected, he will strengthen the voice of common public in the state assembly.”
The Thowra seat remained vacant after the resignation of former Congress MLA Sushanta Borgohain who joined BJP on August 1, citing the existing political crisis in the state unit APCC.
In the 2021 Assam Legislative Assembly elections, Sushanta had defeated BJP candidate Kushal Duwori.
Earlier on Wednesday, Gogoi informed that his party has sent a proposal to Assam Congress to leave at least one seat out of the six assembly constituencies going for bypolls soon.
The six constituencies of Gossaigaon, Tamulpur, Bhabanipur, Mariani, Majuli and Thowra will go for a bypolls likely to be held by the end of this year.
Two seats were left vacant after the deaths of a Bodoland Peoples’ Front (BPF) and a United Peoples Party Liberal (UPPL) member due to Covid-19 while two Congress leaders moved to the BJP. Former chief minister and Majuli MLA Sarbananda Sonowal joined the union cabinet and an AIUDF legislator is speculated to join BJP this week.
