Guwahati: Outgoing Assam chief minister Sarbananda Sonowal has submitted his resignation to governor Jagdish Mukhi at Raj Bhavan in Guwahati on Sunday.
The BJP Legislature Party in Assam will meet to elect the next chief minister of the state. The meeting was scheduled to begin from 11 am; it once got delayed by an hour and union minister Narendra Singh Tomar and party general secretary Arun Singh will also be present on the occasion.
On Saturday, Himanta Biswa Sarma and Sonowal, both were in New Delhi to meet the BJP central leadership. A series of meetings, lasting for more than four hours, were held with JP Nadda and Amit Shah with the duo.
Sarma, the most powerful minister in the Assam Cabinet, is seen as a strong contender owing to his crucial role in leading the BJP-Alliance to a victory in 75 seats in the 126-member Assam Assembly.
Sonowal’s resignation seems to clear the air of long suspense on the next CM, after a week’s wait.
Sources said that health minister Himanta Biswa Sarma is all set to be the next chief minister of the state. Sccording to the sources, Sarma’s name will be proposed by incumbent chief minister Sarbananda Sonowal in the meeting of the newly-elected MLAs on Sunday afternoon.
The swearing-in ceremony of the new chief minister will take place on Monday. Later in the day, around 4 pm, the BJP unit of Assam will meet Governor Jagdish Mukhi to stake claim form the government.
