Assam CM Sonowal grants district status to Bajali
Guwahati: Ahead of the ensuing elections in Assam, chief minister Sarbananda Sonowal on Wednesday officially granted district status to Assam’s Bajali in a ceremony held near Pathsala in Barpeta, Assam.
Bajali, a subdivision of Barpeta district was formally declared as the 34th district of Assam on January 12, 2021, by the government of Assam.
It is also to be mentioned here that the proposal to make Bajali a district was approved by the Assam government on August 10, 2020.
Meanwhile, 10 officials have been appointed in the new district, and a further 85 posts have been created in Bajali to pave way for a new administration.
The people of Bajali sub-division under Barpeta district have been demanding that the sub-division be upgraded to a district for a long time. The Government’s assent to this long-standing demand was met with muted applause as the state was on the boil over the highly controversial CAA and protests were raging across the land.
Bajali is located 103 kilometers west of Guwahati and has become the 7th district to be formed after 2015.
