The Assam Pradesh Congress Committee(APCC) and Assam Congress Legislature Party have jointly decided to form a high-level team of the APCC to sensitize the people excluded from the final list of the National Registrar of Citizens(NRC). This was informed by APCC President Ripun Bora at Rajib Bhawan on September 11th, 2019.
The team which includes Congress MPs, MLAs, prominent leaders of the party including former chief minister Tarun Gogoi have taken 16 days time to visit different districts of the state in a phase-wise manner from September 13th, 2019.
The team will be on a four-phase awareness tour to help out genuine citizens of the state on how to make an appeal at the Foreigners Tribunal(FT) so that they can prove their citizenship.
Bora informed that the team will begin their tour from Tinsukia and Nagaon districts from tomorrow and then they will leave for other parts of the state. The tour is slated to end on September 28th, 2019.
Slamming Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal, Prime Minister Narendra Modi for “remaining silent” on the NRC, Bora said, “The government is just trying to hide their mistakes through NRC. There was a time when the BJP used to take credit for the updation process and now most of the leaders want a re-verification,”.
“They are just playing with the emotions of the people and exploiting people through religious polarization,” added Bora.
The Assam government on August 31st, 2019 officially released the final National Register of Citizens(NRC) list where names of 3,11,21,004 persons were found eligible for inclusion leaving out 19,06,657 persons including those who did not submit claims.
Post the publication a number of the BJP leaders have demanded that there should be a re-verification of the documents.
