Guwahati: Amid the election fever grappling Assam, the state is also seeing a surge in the number of COVID-19 caseloads.
A hotel in North Lakhimpur has been sealed off by the district administration after a guest from Delhi, who checked into the hotel, was found to be COVID-19 positive.
Reportedly, the guest had conducted a Covid test at New Delhi prior to his departure to North Lakhimpur and its report reached North Lakhimpur Medical College Hospital on Monday.
On Tuesday, another guest in the hotel, also traveling from outside the state, was tested Covid positive.
Following the cases, the Lakhimpur district administration has also announced a mandatory RAT test for travelers arriving at Lilabari airport following the detection.
The state of Assam is witnessing a sudden rapid surge in COVID-19 cases as 92 fresh cases have been detected throughout Tuesday.
Among the new cases, Kamrup Metro has registered 26 cases, followed by Jorhat at 14 cases, Nagaon at 12, Dibrugarh at 8. Cachar, Hojai, Kamrup Rural, and Sonitpur have registered 5 cases each, while, Golagahat and Sivasagar have registered 3 cases each. Tinsukia detected 2 positive cases in the state. One each case were also detected from Biswanath, Darrang, Karimganj, and Lakhimpur,
Health officials in the state fear that COVID-19 cases may rise further if protocols are not followed sincerely.
Notably, during the course of Assam Assembly Elections, COVID-19 protocols and other social distancing norms were violated rampantly.
In another such case, 11 out of 138 girls of DCB Girls’ College in Upper Assam’s Jorhat tested positive for COVID-19 on Tuesday.
It may be mentioned here that, in the last 24 hours, the country’s total COVID-19 cases have surged passes 1 lakh.
