Assam Cricket Association Members Should Resign: Tarun Gogoi

Rain water reportedly seeped through leaking covers that were used to cover the pitch at the Barsapara Stadium

Former Assam Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi on January 6th, 2020 lashed out at the members of the Assam Cricket Association (ACA) for failing to ensure a dry pitch at Guwahati’s Barasapara Stadium for the T20I series opener between India and Sri Lanka on January 5th, 2020.

Gogoi blamed the ACA members for “hurting the pride of Assam”. The match had to be abandoned due to wet patches on the pitch.

The much-awaited match was scheduled to start at 7 pm, however, it started to rain from 6:40 pm onwards. The match was called off without a ball bowled shortly before 10 pm local time.

Mocking the Assam Chief Minister, Gogoi tweeted, “The government dreams of transforming Guwahati into a Sports capital while they have not been able to construct a single stadium inspite of having @KirenRijiju at the centre, they are still using the ones that we built. They have not been able to host the match even.”

He added, “ACA could not even dry the pitch. That is indeed shameful. The pride of Assam has been hurt on the national and international stage. Because of 2-3 people, we have been shown to be useless in front of the world. They should not only apologize, they should, in fact, resign.”

Though the whole of the playing area and outfield was in perfect playing conditions, there were some wet patches on the turf. Rain water reportedly seeped through leaking covers that were used to cover the pitch at the Barsapara Stadium.

The photographs and videos of groundsmen using a hairdryer, steam irons and vacuum cleaners to dry the pitch have gone viral on social media.

This didn’t go down well with the fans. They took to social media to vent out their anger on BCCI and ACA. The incident also led to a meme fest on Twitter.
