Assam: Dacoit Injured In Police Firing While Escaping From Custody In Jorhat

Guwahati: A person, who was arrested on charges of a dacoit, was shot at by the police on Sunday in Assam’s Jorhat district after he allegedly attempted to flee from custody.

Police identified the accused as Pranjal Bora alias Deha Bora.

The Bora was arrested on Saturday night when he along with his accompanied opened fire at a business establishment at a truck stand in AT Road’s Marwari Patti in Jorhat town, with the intention of robbing it. The police also recovered the pistol used during the firing and some other weapons.

As per sources, the encounter took place when Bora was being taken to his residence in Amguri by police for investigation when he attempted to flee.

The official stated that after repeated warnings the man refused to stop, and police had to fire targeting his leg.

Meanwhile, the accused was immediately taken to Jorhat Medical College and Hospital for treatment.

However, Assam has recorded the third highest “encounter killing” during the last five years in the country, minister of state for home Nityanand Rai told Parliament. Out of the total 655 “encounter killings” that have been reported from across the country over the last five years, at least 50 were reported from Assam. According to the Union Home Ministry’s record, Assam recorded a total of 18 deaths during 2021-2022.

In another hand, the Assam government has informed the Gauhati High Court that 51 persons have been killed while a total of 139 people were injured in the state in police encounters from May last year to May this year.
