GUWAHATI: Three more people died in Assam on Sunday as a result of storms and lightning, bringing the total death toll due bad weather to 17.

The Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA) reported fourteen deaths on Saturday.

The deceased identified as Lakhinath Doley, residents of Ramdhan Dikhari village under Jonai revenue circle died on Sunday due to lightning strike.

Meanwhile, on the same day, another person was killed in a storm in Morigaon district, has identified as Shohidul Islam.

Furthermore, another death occurred in the Jorhat district on the same day. Deceased identified as Maikon Mura, a resident of 1 No. Soraipani village.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) on Monday has advised people to stay indoors and to avoid water bodies in several northeastern states including Assam as a safety measure during storms predicted in the next 48 hours.

The weather department has also suggested farmers to stay away from farming during such storms to avoid any damage.

The IMD issued warning of thunderstorm and lightning with gusty winds (30-40 KMPH) are very likely to occur at isolated places over Assam, Meghalaya, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram and Tripura on Wednesday.
