Assam: Dreaded criminal who was Covid19 positive escaped from hospital in Lakhimpur
Guwahati: A suspected drug racketeer and a dreaded robber, Gerjai Boruah (40) of Dhakuakhana, has allegedly escaped from a hospital in Lakhimpur on Saturday morning.
He was undergoing medical attention in the hospital after being tested Covid19 positive recently.
Geiraj was arrested in September last year and had also reportedly suffered a bullet injury during a police encounter while he was allegedly trying to escape before.
Hospital authority said that he was lodged in a Covid19 ward of the hospital. “There was a huge rush in the Covid ward due to the rise of Covid19 cases in the area. We suspect that taking advantage of the rush, he managed to flee.”
Sources in the hospital also claimed that though he was under police surveillance but was not handcuffed properly.
Geiraj, who had earlier completed a jail term of eight years for involvement in several theft and robbery cases, came out of jail in 2020. But soon after his release, he allegedly resumed his illegal activities in the area.
