Guwahati: The directorate of geology and mining (DGM), Assam, has reached its final stage of drilling before getting access to the coal layer in Assam’s Karbi Anglong district. It will be the fifth coalfield is going to be discovered in the hill district.
In Karbi Anglong and Dima Hasao districts, four coal fields have been discovered since 1980 where an estimated 2 million coal stock is lying.
The DGM had conducted the first survey in the area in 2017-18.
DGM officials said that the team has already reached carbonaceous material, which indicates the presence of coal layer beneath it adding that several other drillings will be done later in the area and if satisfied, the comprehensive report will be done, mentioning the quality of coal, details of deposits and drilling data.
So far, the DGM team has drilled 59 meters in Klurdung where no such exploration took place earlier and the drilling officials said minimum five years is required to complete exploration in a geological area.
