Assam: Drop in Rhino poaching; Only one in 2021
Guwahati: In a major feat in wildlife conservation, the state has recorded only one rhino poaching last year. This was the lowest number in terms of rhino poaching incidents in the state since 2000.
Since 2000, at least 190 rhinos were poached, said official records.
As per the statistics rhino poaching in Assam has witnessed a significant drop since 2017 when the total number of poaching incidents was 6. In 2018, though it was 7 rhino poaching cases, it came down to 3 in 2019 and 2 in 2020.
Prior to 2017, the state recorded very high numbers of cases of poaching of rhinos. While in both 2013 and 2014, at least 27 poaching incidents recorded each; in 2015 at least 17 poaching cases were registered in the state. In 2016, some 18 cases were recorded.
Hailing the achievement, Assam police special director general GP Singh said, “Year 2021 saw only one incident of rhino poaching in April 2021. The containment of poaching of one-horn rhino has been a major achievement of Anti-Poaching Task Force constituted by the state government in June 2021.”
Last year, Assam made history by burning nearly 2,500 rhino horns in one of the largest anti-poaching drives of its kind in Asia. Following Vedic rituals in a public ceremony, the rhino horns were burned in upper Assam’s Bokakhat to mark World Rhino Day.
