Guwahati: Assam police seized a huge quantity of contraband drugs and two peddlers were arrested in the Karimganj district of Assam, the official said on Wednesday.
Based on specific information, on Tuesday night district police team conducted a search operation and intercepted a vehicle at the Bazaricherra area.
As per the official, a vehicle was coming from Mizoram’s side carrying narcotics and the police team immediately set up naka checking in multiple locations. During search operation, police recovered 131 soap cases containing 2.01 kg of heroin and 50,000 Yaba tablets from the vehicle in 3-4 secret chambers, officials added.
However, police also apprehended two drug smugglers identified as Kabir Ahmed and Gopendra Das. The seized drugs have a market value of Rs 20 crores.
A case has been registered and an investigation is underway.
Meanwhile, taking to Twitter, Assam chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma wrote, “Karimganj Police intercepted a vehicle coming from a neighbouring state at Kontakcherra and seized 2.01 kg Heroin packed in 131 soap cases and 50,000 YABA tablets. Also apprehended two accused in the operation. Bravo! Keep up the excellent work.”
In another incident, Guwahati police seized a large quantity of contraband drugs worth more than Rs 14 crore, official said on Wednesday. The contraband drugs were seized from an ambulance.
Joint CP, Guwahati, Partha Sarathi Mahanta said that 50,000 Yaba tablets, and 200 grams of Heroin were recovered. One person was also arrested.
