    Assam Earthquake: Two reportedly died; Extensive damages

    Water was also seen seeping out from a paddy field in Narayanpur area of Dhekiajuli, the epicenter of the earthquake in Assam

    GUWAHATI: At least two persons have reportedly died during the massive tremor that hit the state on Wednesday morning. While one person died in Chandrapur area of the city, another woman was reportedly died in Nagaon district’s Bebejia area.

    However, no official confirmation was received from the authority.

    Kamrup (Metro) deputy commissioner Biswajit Pegu said, “We are collecting the damage assessment and so far there is no report of any casualty. The person who died in Chandrapur might have died of a heart attack during the tremor.”

    One middle-aged man from Guwahati’s Bhetapara also reportedly sustained an injury during the earthquake and undergoing treatment at a city hospital.

    On Wednesday, a massive 6.4 magnitude earthquake rocked the entire region. There were at least six aftershocks also felt in the state. The epicenter of the earthquake was Sonitpur’s Dhekiajuli.   

    Heavy damages to several buildings were reported across the state. Cracks have developed in building walls in multiple areas while one under-construction building in Nagaon has almost collapsed.
