Guwahati: A firing incident between forest officials and a gang of timber smugglers reported from the Dehing Patkai National Park located in the Dibrugarh and Tinsukia districts in the state on Tuesday.

Sources said that timber smugglers were using sophisticated machines to chop trees when caught by the forest sleuth.

Immediately, the smugglers allegedly fired upon the forest sleuth triggering an exchange of few rouns. However, the accused were succeeded to flee the spot taking advantage of darkness of the night.

A combing operation was launched on Wednesday morning to nab them. The officials seized the items and machines left behind by the gang.

It was the second such incident of firing in the forest areas of Dehing Patkai national park this year. Earlier, in February, forest team and a group of poachers exchanged firing. No one was hurt then too.
