    Assam Floods: 20 Rhinos Die In Kaziranga National Park

    Guwahati:A total of 20 one-horned rhinoceros died in the ravaging deluge that engulfed around 95 per cent of the Kaziranga National Park, a World Heritage Site. As many as 19 rhinos died due to drowning and one due to other reasons till July 31st, 2019, as per an official report.

    70 animals including four rhinos were rescued by forest officials, CWRC team and local people on July 31st, 2019. 61 animals were rescued and released after treatment.

    187 animals died due to drowning and eleven for various other reasons. Seventeen animals were killed after being hit by vehicles, as per the July 31st, 2019 report.

    Due to the floods, a large number of elephants, hog deer, sambar, water buffalo, porcupine, swamp deer, wild boars, were remained trapped in the park. Animals crossed the busy National Highway-37 and took shelter in the nearby Karbi hills. As many as 16 hog deer were killed while crossing the highway and 120 others die due to drowning.

    As on July 31st, 2019, seven swamp deer, four water buffaloes, 12 sambars, 20 wild boars and four porcupines became victims of the devastating deluge. A total of seven camps are still reeling under floodwaters.
