Assam Floods: Centre Releases Rs 251.55 Crore Aid

Guwahati, July 16, 2019

The central government on July 16th, 2019 released Rs 251.55 crore as assistance from the central share of the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) for 2019-20 as the ravaging flood in Assam continued to deteriorate.

The Assam Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal, while thanking the Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah, Tweeted, “Quick release of grant-in-aid of Rs 251.55 crore by the Centre bolsters our effort to tackle #AssamFloods and provide relief to those affected.”

The state’s Health and Finance Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma also thanked the PM and Shah for releasing the assistance. “I thank Hon PM Narendra Modi and HM Amit Shah for prompt release of Rs 251.55 crore grants-in-aid to Assam towards the central share of SDRF for 2019-20. This shall immensely help in relief operations and mitigating sufferings of people affected by Assam floods,” Sarma tweeted.

A total of 5,259,142 people and 2,344,258 animals across 30 out of 33 districts in Assam have been affected so far as per the Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA) report. According to official data, five people have died in the flood this year so far while 37 animals have been washed away.
