Guwahati: At least four minor girls drowned in a pond in Assam’s Nagaon district on Friday, police said.
The incident took place in Sutirpar village, under Juria Police Station of the district.
According to sources, a group of five girls was playing near a pond, when four of them suddenly slipped and fell into the water, a police officer said.
Villagers rushed to the spot to rescue the girls, but only recovered the bodies of the children from the pond, officially added.
The deceased have been identified as Nur Nessa (15), Arsina Khatun (10), Rahima Khatun (12), and Imrana Khatun (6).
Meanwhile, the villagers claimed the owner of the pond for the incident as there was allegedly no fencing around it.
An investigation has been launched, police added.Â
Last year, Assam registered 245 cases of drowning (Accidental Falls into Water body), while 231 people were killed and 9 injured, as per the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB).
