Assam girl Bornali Borah has made the region proud by winning gold (45kg junior category) in the Commonwealth Weightlifting Championship being held at Apia, Samoa. Bornali, who hails from the Dikhowmukh area of Assam’s Sivasagar district, lifted 55kg in snatch and 77kg in jerk.
Associated with the Sivasagar District Weightlifting Association, Bornali is the daughter of Ritumoni Borah and Dibyalata Borah. Bornali who is born to a farmer’s family completed her Higher Secondary from Dikhowmukh Higher Secondary School and was trained under Sarat Mohan Neog and Gauranga Bora during her initial days.
Bornali also became the national champion at the Khelo India Youth games and is undergoing training at Patiala. She has also been selected to participate in the United States Olympic Trials.
Assam Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal took to Twitter to encourage and congratulate two champions from the state, Bornali along with Rekhamoni Gogoi who won the Junior 40Kg category of the same event. Rekhamoni won silver with a lift of 47kg in snatch and 59kg in jerk.
