Guwahati: Assam government and Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Guwahati has decided to jointly set up a multispecialty post graduate medical college and research institute at a cost of Rs 546 crore.

The first of its kind Assam Advanced Healthcare Innovation Institute (AAHI) will also have an integrated multi-speciality 350-bed hospital.

Chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said, “AAHI will mark a new paradigm in interdisciplinary medical research and innovations at the upcoming institute will enhance India’s medical tech industry in the coming years. Our government has committed Rs 546 Crore for the project while IIT-G will contribute the required land and expertise.”

Sarma was attending the inauguration ceremony of the North East Research Conclave at IITG.

AAHI will focus on research and innovation in advanced areas like stem cell research, implantation, artificial intelligence, simulation labs, robotic surgery, and wearables electronics among others. The institute will spread over 50,000 square metres.

The 350 bedded medical hospital will come up on the IIT Guwahati campus and act as an interface between doctors, researchers and technologists.

Sidhharth Singh, commissioner and secretary in the department of health in the state, said the move aims to promote research in diverse areas of health sciences and technology.
