Assam Govt to induct guest teachers in schools to fill vacancies temporarily
Assam Education Minister Ranoj Pegu

Guwahati: The Assam government for the first time planning to appoint guest teachers at its schools to mitigate the shortage of teachers, Education Minister Ranoj Pegu said on Sunday

In the state, there are currently around 8,000 posts of school teachers lying vacant and a number of vacancies are reserved for Scheduled Tribe (Hills) category candidates only, Pegu stated.

The state cabinet has already approved the proposal of appointing guest teachers, he added.

Meanwhile, the Education Department has started the preliminary steps to appoint them in some schools till permanent faculty members are appointed, Minister said.

Pegu further added that rather than interfering directly, the government initially plans to carry out the suggestion by establishing alumni groups in the schools, particularly in the historical schools.

“These alumni associations will play a crucial role in quality education in schools. To ensure that classes are not disrupted, they will work to get guest teachers until permanent ones are appointed”, Pegu stated.

“The main aim is to provide quality education to the school students. The guest teachers will be provided a fixed amount as monthly remuneration and it will not be on a per-class basis like those in colleges or universities”, Pegu said.

However, the minister also clarified that the guest teachers will not be like the contract teachers, who are already working in thousands of schools across the state.
