In order to boost the tea industry, the Assam government is planning to hangout spots on the lines of the popular Café Coffee Day (CCD).
Expressing concern over the present status of the tea industry, Chandra Mohan Patowary, Assam Minister of Commerce and Industry said that more emphasis should be given to branding.
“On the lines of the CCD, we will open ‘Assam Tea‘ is Kolkata, Mumbai and Assam. And the auction at the Guwahati Tea Auction centre will be made online,” he said. The CCD, a part of Coffee Day Global Limited, is a favourite hangout for coffee and conversations. They have outlets across the country.
He mentioned that the gardens under the Assam Tea Corporation Limited have started to disperse the bonus amount to the workers.
Earlier, Patwory had said that to match the international standard, the Assam tea industry has to adopt innovative methods to attract the new-age customers. He had also mentioned that the marketing and branding of Assam tea is the need of the hour to keep up the market trends.
The tea industry in Assam is about 172 years old and plays an important part in the national economy. According to the Government of Assam website, Assam alone produces more than half of India’s tea production. The estimated annual average production of tea in Assam is about 630- 700 million kg.
Patowary had earlier mentioned that Indian Institute of Technology and Indian Institute of Management will conduct a study on the present status of the tea industry and suggest remedies.
