Guwahati: The government on Thursday came out with the total number of beggars in the country. The figures were given by Social Justice minister Thawar Chand Gehlot in a written reply to Lok Sabha.
As per the data released, Assam topped the charts with 22,116 beggars among the northeastern states. While Mizoram ranked last in the list with just 53 beggars.
The census shows a total of 4,13,670 beggars in the country, among which 2,21,673 are males and 1,91,997 are females.
West Bengal topped the chart with 81,224beggars, followed by Uttar Pradesh (85,835), Andhra Pradesh (30,218), Bihar (29,723).
Among the Union Territories, New Delhi has the most numbers 2,187 followed by 121 in Chandigarh.
Meanwhile, Lakshwadeep has only two vagrants according to the census.
