Assam: Health dept orders probe after COVID vaccines found frozen

Guwahati: After 100 vials containing 1000 doses of COVID-19 vaccine Covishield were found in frozen state, the Assam health department has ordered a probe into the matter.

The incident was reported at Silchar Medical College and Hospital (SMCH), one of the premier medical facilities based in the Barak Valley region of the state.The frozen vials at SMCH were allegedly stored at sub-zero temperature.

Reportedly, the frozen doses would be sent for laboratory tests to know about their efficacy. Action could also be initiated against senior administrative staff for any negligence on their part.

Assam has received 2,21,500 doses of vaccines – 2,01,500 of them Covishield and 20,000 Covaxin – of the total 3,80,000 doses needed to vaccinate 1,90,000 health workers in the first stage.

According to officials, both the vaccines – Covisheild and Covaxin needs to be stored at temperature of 2-8 degree Celsius.

Meanwhile, a total 2,043 of beneficiaries received the first dose of COVID-19 vaccine on the third day on Tuesday, taking the cumulative total number of beneficiaries receiving the vaccines to 7,585 so far.
