Assam might be best known for its natural habitat, jaw-dropping locations with fascinating histories, featuring silk bazaars and the hilltop Kamakhya Temple, but amid these surroundings, there are some sites in the state with mysterious locations which are less talked about.

If you are a fan of paranormal activities, here are some of the most spooky locations to check out for:

Royal Global University

Mayong Village

This village in Assam also known as the Land of Black Magic. The village often referred to as ‘India’s Black Magic capital’ is in Morigaon district. It lies on the bank of the river Brahmaputra, approximately 40 km from the city of Guwahati. It is popular for its practice of black magic and witchcraft.

According to the locals, ‘Mayong’ got its name from the Sanskrit word Maya, which means illusion. Over the years there have been thrilling stories how a human through black magic is transformed into an animal.

While the place has been a tourist, it also has a museum named ‘Mayong Central Museum’, many old relics related to black magic are kept here.

Haunted Banyan tree at Puranigudam

The infamous Banyan tree located in Kakharigaon area, Puranigudam under Nagaon district is said to be haunted.

It is believed that during the Burmese wars in the 1820s, the Burmese used to harass the Assamese villagers, tie them up to the banyan tree and set them on fire. The locals believe that the tree is haunted by the souls killed and tortured by the Burmese.

Jatinga – Valley of Death for Birds

It is a village located on a spur of the Haflong ridge, the headquarter of the district. This place is famous for the phenomenon of birds “committing suicide”. Though the village is blessed with lush green forests surrounded by serene mountains, the place is famous for the unexplained phenomenon of mass bird suicides.

Every year migratory birds visit a specific stretch of land and commit mass suicide on moonless nights between September and October.

Sundarbari Cemetery, Guwahati

The Sundarbari graveyard located in Guwahati city has been reported to be haunted for years. It is said that people who visit this place have experienced paranormal incidents near this cemetery. Some people have also complained about getting sick after visiting this cemetery.

Bogijuli Camp

Strange happenings and unexplainable occurrences have been reported at Bogijuli camp in the Nameri forest reserve. Many people have complained about hearing the laughter and cries of a woman but no one is ever seen.

Hahim Picnic Spot

Hahim, a famous picnic in the outskirts of Guwahati, apparently turns into a spooky place after dark. There have been reports of paranormal activities and it is believed that the Hahim Picnic spot is haunted by an “evil witch” who roams around this area.

Jorhat Gymkhana Club House

It is said different noises, sounds are heard during midnight at the original Gymkhana Club. The locals claimed different symbols used in black magic were found in various parts of Gymkhana Club house.
