Guwahati: At least four students allegedly committed suicide owing to their results in the High School Leaving Certificate (HSLC) examination which was declared on Tuesday. While three of them died, one was struggling in a hospital.
The incidents were reported from Darrang, Udalguri, Charaideo and Golaghat district.
A 16-year-old HSLC candidate allegedly committed suicide in Hahinigaon village near Tangla town in Udalguri district on Tuesday. The deceased has been identified as Jemy Sarania.
According to sources, the student allegedly failed the examination of HSLC which was announced on Tuesday morning.
The girl allegedly committed suicide by jumping in front of a speeding train at Hahinigaon village near Tangla town on the same day. However, it is unclear whether the results or other factors compelled her to take such drastic measures.
“We have recovered the body of the girl and sent the body for post-mortem to Udalguri Civil Hospital,” said a Tangla GRP official.
In second incident, Rahul Bora (15) of Mangaldoi committed suicide on Monday a day before the results were declared.
Bora committed suicide in his house by hanging himself in the absence of his parents.
As per sources, he left a suicide note where he apologised his parents over unable to give what they wanted.
However, it was found that he passed the examination with letter marks in Sanskrit and secured second division.
In another case, the student identified as Sobin Chutia of Jitour village in Charaimari, committed suicide after he failed the HSLC examination.
Following the result, another student from Sapekhati area of Upper Assam’s Charaideo district set herself on fire, after failing to clear her examination.
The victim was admitted to the Assam Medical College and Hospital (AMCH) in a critical condition with over 50 percent burn injuries, said sources.
It was found that she had failed in four out of six subjects in HSLC examination, sources added.
However, the girl has been admitted to ICU and is still in a serious condition.
The results of the HSLC examinations under SEBA (Board of Secondary Education) were declared with a total pass percentage of 56.49 percent in the state.
As many as 2,29,131 students have cleared the HSLC 2022 exam which were conducted by the Board of Secondary Education, Assam (SEBA).
Notably, around 4,05,582 students have appeared for the HSLC examination this year in the state.
