Assam: Kaziranga Elevated Corridor Is Soon To Be A Reality

Guwahati: The much hyped elevated corridor at the NH-37 stretch of Kaziranga National Park from Jakhalabandha to Bokakhat is soon going to be a reality, said chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Saturday.

The state government has been working on the project to reduce man-animal conflict in the park area especially on the highway stretch. The elevated corridor was proposed to be of a length of 35-km from Jakhalabandha to Bokakhat.

Sarma said, “The Kaziranga elevated corridor is no longer a dream but is going to be a reality soon. Already the Centre has agreed to the project and forest ministry also issued a no objection certificate. It will be an Rs 6000 crore project.”

The proposal of the elevated corridor prepared by the PWD (Building & NH) Department in close consultation with Wildlife Institute of India covers a length of around 35 km with a view to boost wildlife preservation and tourism promotion at the national park.

The animal corridors at seven locations of a 54-km stretch of the national highway from Ghorakati of Burapahar range to Bokakhat have been witnessing incidents of park animals either getting killed or injured by vehicle-hit during monsoon when the animals stray out of the park to reach to highlands.

Besides, many animals also migrate through these corridors round the year. Efforts by the park authorities to protect the animals from speeding vehicles by enforcement of speed restrictions have failed to produce effective results.
