Assam: Kaziranga gets commandos to counter rhino poaching

Guwahati: At least 20 commando personnel were deployed as a part of the anti-poaching unit in the world famous Kaziranga National Park on Wednesday.

The deployment came after the state recorded the first rhino poaching of the year last week.

Earlier, inspecting the crime spot in the park, Assam police special Director General GP Singh announced of the deployment of commandos in the park to boost the anti poaching operations.

While 10 commandoes were reportedly deployed in the park’s Eastern Assam Wildlife Division, 10 others were deployed in the Biswanath Wildlife Divisions.

The state recorded the first poaching of rhino in this year on January 20. Forest officials found the carcass of the rhino in a decomposed state while its horn was not intact.

Last year, only one poaching was recorded, the lowest in last two decades.
