Assam: Kaziranga records first poaching in 2021
GUWAHATI: A carcass of a fully grown one-horned rhino was found by the forest officials in a water body under the Kohora range area of Kaziranga National Park on Tuesday evening. This was the first poaching incident in the park in 2021 after an interval of some nine months.
One empty cartridge of a .303 rifle was recovered at the crime scene. “Postmortem done, bullet injury mark found,” said Park authority.
As per the forest officials, the rhino was probably killed by poachers at least 3-4 days before.
In May 2020 poachers had killed and chopped off the horn of a rhino. Last year, at least three incidents of poaching of one-horned rhinos were reported from the Kaziranga National Park.
