Assam: Mahajot requests ECI to ensure fair, smooth counting of votes
Guwahati: The parties under Opposition Congress-led Mahajot in a memorandum requested the Chief Election Commission of India to ensure fair and smooth counting of votes for the Assam Assembly Election 2021.
In a letter to the Chief ECI, they requested the commission to direct all Deputy Commissioner, SDO (Civil), returning Officers of Assam to furnish the detailment of officials to engage for counting of votes to all the contesting candidates.
Mahajot has also urged to videograph the May 2 counting of the assembly elections and also the EVM carrying process from the strong room to counting hall.
They requested to furnish the information regarding the number of postal ballots in the constituency, date of issue of postal ballot, numbers of postal ballot received so far, number of absentee voters in the constituency, number of votes cast by absentee voters, number of election duty certificates issued, and number of election duty certificates received.
“Direction to be issued to all Returning Officers to count the postal ballots, Ballot collected from homes of the absentee voters and election duty certificate before counting of EVM is taken up. Also to furnish the names and details of the officials detailed for issue, receive and collection of such postal ballot papers, ballots from home etc. to all the contesting candidates,” the letter mentioned.
Mahajot also urged to issue direction to all returning officers that unless one round is finished and recorded in writing, the next round of machines cannot be opened for counting.
The letter included signatures of the leaders of various parties under the Congress-led Mahajot as Ripun Bora (Cong), Suprakash Talukdar (CPI-M), Munin Mahanta (CPI), Karim Uddin Barbhuyan (AIUDF), Manjit Mahanta (AGM) and many others.
