Assam man arrested on suspicion of being Pakistani spy in Arunachal Pradesh


Itanagar, January 9: The police arrested a man hailing from Assam who is suspected to be a spy of Pakistan’s intelligence agencies from Anjaw district in Arunachal Pradesh, near the India-China border.

The arrested person identified as Nirmal Rai is a resident of Sadiya, Tinsukia. He was working as an army porter at Kibithu and Dichu, two border posts along the Line of Actual Control (LAC).

According to the police, Rai was first apprehended on January 6 by Army personnel and later he was handed over to police. Rai worked at a burger shop in Dubai between 2016 and 2018 before moving to Kibithu.

As per the Army, Nirmal was probably trained and recruited by Dubai based handler of Pakistan’s Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI) and he was involved in passing sensitive information on location and deployment of army units, weapon profiles and artillery guns at Kibithu, as well as infrastructure development along the LAC.

Currently, the police are interrogating him and a mobile phone has been seized from his possession.

Rai was arrested under the provisions of Official Secrets Act, section 120B of the IPC for criminal conspiracy and section 72 of the IT Act for breach of privacy.
