    Assam Martyr’s Memorial To Be Set Up In Guwahati

    The Assam government has allotted a 100- bigha land at Paschim Boragaon in the city to set up a park in memory of the 855 martyrs of the six-year Assam Agitation

    Assam Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal that the martyrs of the Assam Movement are the ‘Jatiya Nayaks’ of the state and therefore the government will set up a Swahhid Kshetra and Udyan in Guwahati.

    “To keep alive the memories of their immense struggle and ultimate sacrifice, we have decided to set up Swahid Kshetra & Udyan in Guwahati at the cost of Rs 200 crore,” Sonowal said.

    Once hailed as ‘Jatiya Nayak’ (Hero of the Community), a title bestowed on him by the All Assam Students Union (AASU) for his campaign against illegal immigrants, he is the main target of the protests against the Citizenship Amendment Act in the state. He has been called by various nicknames by anti-CAA protesters including AASU.

    In an interaction with media persons in the city on January 1st, 2020, Sonowal said that his government will implement the Clauses of the Assam Accord. “Let me assure you that the indigenous people of Assam will always be protected. It is our government which will implement Clauses of the Assam Accord in spirit and we are taking all steps to provide Constitutional Safeguards for our people.”
