Assam Meghalaya Border Issue: GSU Ri-Bhoi Unit demands proper solution
GUWAHATI: A group of villagers from Pilangkata and Maikhuli, as well as members of the Garo Students’ Union (GSU) on Monday have stepped out in the open to express their unhappiness with the committees’ inspection on Saturday.
According to the sources, they demanded that a proper inspection be carried out to determine the demarcation of the border between the two states.
The protest began on Monday with a gathering in Maikhuli, followed by a rally towards Iongkhuli village, where locals carrying placards and shouted slogans expressed their sadness and disgust with the way the regional committees of both Assam and Meghalaya inspected the border on Saturday.
The people urged that the Chief Minister of Meghalaya, Conrad K Sangma, come and visit the area personally to gather details about the land as well as to learn about the area’s history before making any final judgments.
Within a few days of the physical inspection undertaken by the Regional Committees formed by both the Assam and Meghalaya governments to resolve the long-standing boundary disputes, the issue was resolved.
Protesters requested CM Sangma to personally visit the areas to obtain the true facts and not to accept any report claiming that the ‘left side’ is under Assam and the ‘right side’ is under Meghalaya, and also urged not fall under Assam’s jurisdiction.
Sunmoon Marak (Adviser of GSU Ri Bhoi), Ringkumoni Marak (women leader of the Garo Mahila) and others joined the villagers at the protest.
