Guwahati: In a bid to provide better livelihood options to the farmers at the grassroots level in the state, “Native Basket” product brand has been launched on Tuesday to bring the heirloom varieties of the rich diversity of native crops of Assam to the market.

Under the initiative, around 24 heirloom native rive varieties and nine of its processed products have been identified and selected for launching under the brand ‘Native basket’.

To initiate the endeavor, the organisation has planned to launch four more heirloom native rice varieties in the market on December 30.

Moreover, remaining 20 rice varieties and nine of its processed products will be launched in the market in the next year under the brand and in subsequent years more of the rice varieties will be launched.

The brand ‘Native Basket’ was evolved in October 2020 to rescue the invaluable crops genetic resources of the Northeast region.

The organisation received support under the UN Environment (UNEP) implemented GEF funded project jointly executed in India by the Alliance of Biodiversity International & CIAT and the Indian Council for Agricultural Research (ICAR).
