Guwahati: Noted economist and founder CMD of the Northeastern Development Finance Corporation Ltd (NEDFi), Dr Jayanta Madhab passed away at a city hospital in Guwahati on Sunday midnight. He was 90.
Dr Madhab, who had heart ailments, was also suffering from diabetes. He died at Apollo Hospital in Guwahati.
He will be cremated with full state honour. Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal has asked Assam chief secretary Kumar Sanjay Krishna to attend the event on behalf of the state government.
Mourning the loss of the prominent intellectual, Sonowal wrote in Twitter: “Condolences on the demise of noted economist and a former director of Asian Development Bank, Dr Jayanta Madhab. His death is a great loss for the nation and I offer my prayers for the departed soul.”
Originally from Jorhat in Assam, Dr Madhab was former director of asian Development Bank (ABD), he also served as advisor to then chief minister Tarun Gogoi, but quit, citing bureaucratic red-tape.
One of most reputed economist in the country of his time, Dr Madhab had an illustrious career. He worked with RG Baruah in his initial phase, passed out from London School of Economics and worked in Asian Development Bank, Manilla wherein he retired as Director. He came and started entrepreneurial venture including GTB.
Dr Madhab was appointed the first Chairman of NEDFi and developed a strong fundamental for NEDFi.
