Guwahati: At least 1032 number of doubtful cases which were included in the final draft of the National Register of Citizens (NRC) has been referred to the concerned deputy commissioners to take necessary action, revealed an RTI report.

The number of the doubtful cases was surprisingly lesser than what was expected. The state government had rejected the NRC in its current form and prayed the Supreme Court for allowing a re-verification of at least 30% names in districts bordering Bangladesh and 10% in the rest of the state. The NRC Coordinator had too approached the Supreme Court in May seeking re-verification of the list.

Over 19 lakh of the 3.29 crore applicants in Assam were excluded from the final draft register published on August 31, 2019.

Earlier, the state coordinator of the National Register of Citizens (NRC), Hitesh Dev Sarma, has asked all deputy commissioners in Assam to provide details of “ineligible persons” who have been included in the NRC.

It was suspected that many doubtful voters, declared foreigners, reference pending at Foreigners Tribunals (FT), descendants of D voters, descendants of declared foreigners, cases of declared foreigners pending in FTs have made it into the final NRC list.
