Guwahati: Another ailing employee of the now-defunct Nagaon Paper Mill passed away taking the death toll of workers of two Assam-based Hindustan Paper Corporation Limited (HPCL) to 105.

The deceased has been identified as Koliman Basaumatary (57), a resident of Jagiroad in Morigaon district,

According to sources, he died due to a cardiac arrest on Monday.

Basumatary had been suffering from major heart ailments but was unable to afford treatment due to a financial crisis caused by non-payment of salary, said the union of the Joint Action Committee of Recognized Unions (JACRU).

The total number of workers killed at the paper mill has risen to 105.

The Cachar Paper Mill at Panchgram in Hailakandi district and Nagaon Paper Mill at Jagiroad in Morigaon have been non-functional since October 2015 and March 2017, respectively.

However, the Assam government had agreed to a relief package of Rs 375 crore for the rescue of the workers, funds have not been released yet, JACRU said.
