Guwahati: Bru (Reang) militants were ready to return to the mainstream in Assam’s Hailakandi district of South Assam on December 12, said police sources.

Assam police sources said that around 1000 members of the militant outfit of United Democratic Liberation Front of Barak Valley (UDLFBV) and Bru Revolutionary Army of Union (BRAU) have expressed their willingness to lay arms.

The arms lay down ceremony was scheduled to take place at the Katlicherra area. Members of the outfits were under ceasefire currently.

Both state and Centre have negotiated with the outfits to come into the mainstream and lay down the arms.

In the 90s, both militant outfits spread a reign of terror along the Assam-Mizoram bordering areas, particularly in the Hailakandi district.

The outfit members were involved in several cases of extortion, kidnap and other illegal activities.
