Assam Police arrests nine in Tinsukia mob-lynching incident

The victim was allegedly lynched to death by a mob, suspecting him to be ‘goat theif’

Guwahati: Tinsukia police on Sunday arrested at least nine people in connection to the alleged mob lynching incident at Korjonga Borpathar village under Baghjan police station near Doomdooma in Tinsukia district.

As per reports, one Sarat Moran was allegedly lynched to death by a mob, suspecting him to be ‘goat theif’.

Speaking to TIME8, Debojit Das, officer-in-charge, Baghjan police station, said, “We have arrested nine persons in connection to the incident. Local people in the village had physically assaulted the person suspecting him to be a goat thief; our police team rushed to the spot and rescued the victim. Quick action was initiated. However, he was declared dead by the doctors at the Doomdooma civil hospital.”

Several local sources claimed that Sarat was badly brutalized before being killed, as there were severe cut marks on his body.

OC Das added, “Prime facie, it seems to be a case of public assault on suspicion of theft. He had received injuries on the backside of his head, toe and hand. But, we are waiting for the post mortem report and then we can come to any conclusion on the nature of injuries and weapons used leading to his death.”

A case in connection to incident was registered at Baghjan police station  under section 302, 34 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC).
